Where To Buy Dogs?

There are at least five places from which you can buy your dog. Where to buy dogs depends a lot on the type of characteristics and factors that are important to you. Some places will not have the type of dogs that you want for your new pet. Here are some of the places where dogs can be bought.
  • Dog breeders. Dog breeders are a good source for purebred, pedigree dogs. When buying from a dog breeder, check the other dogs in their care to make sure they are well looked after. If possible, ask for a health guarantee to give you a chance to get the dog checked out by a vet. Search for a reputable breeder and contact any dog clubs to ask which dog breeders they recommend.
  • Dog shelters. Dog shelters (like the council and the RSPCA) can be a good source of dog if some factors are not important to you. Dog shelters are very unlikely to have purebred dogs in their care. They are also less likely to have young puppy dogs available. However, the cost of the dog in most places will cover vaccination. You also have the benefit of knowing you are helping a good cause and saving a dog that may otherwise be put down. When buying a dog from a dog shelter, find out all you can about the dog and check for any health or behavior problems.
  • Pet shops. Pet shops are generally not considered a very good place to buy dogs. Pet shops are known to purchase dogs from puppy mills. They generally will not provide the same care and attention as dog breeders. They are also less likely to provide any assistance or help after the sale if something goes wrong with the dog. A pet store is not a good environment for a dog and many people suggest against buying from a pet store on moral grounds.
  • Classifieds. Many people advertise dogs in the classifieds section in the paper. Some of these classifieds may be for purebred breeds from dog breeders. Others may be unwanted litters that people are trying to get rid of. The classifieds can be a good place to get a dog at a very inexpensive price. However, dogs bought from homes may have behavior and health problems. They may also not have received the appropriate new born puppy care.

  • Online. Buying pets online is never a good idea. Dogs should be checked and looked at carefully before any purchase is made. However, the internet can be a good place to find some of the pets that are available. Dog shelters and some dog breeders may have a description (and even a photo) of dogs that can be bought. This is a good way to see whether there are any dogs that are appropriate before going to look at the dogs.
How Should You Select A Healthy Dog?
When you buy a dog, you want to make sure that is a healthy dog, without any major health problems. When you inspect the dog, you should look it over and check for any obvious health problems. Here are some of the things you need to look for to ensure that the dog you wish to purchase is healthy.
  • They should be alert and energetic when they are moving around.
  • A bloated stomach can be a sign of worms.
  • Discharge from the eyes or nose may indicate a viral or bacterial infection.
  • You should not buy a dog that is vomiting or has diarrhea.
  • Ask to see any health records for the dog.
  • If you are buying from a breeder, you may be able to get a health guarantee that allows you to take the dog to a vet and get a refund if the dog has any significant health problems.
You should also check up on the characteristics of the type of breed that you are buying. Check that the dog you are buying is acting normally according to his breed.

The day you buy your new dog can be very exciting. But before contacting dog breeders, visiting dog shelters or ringing up classifieds, you need to make sure you are ready for a new dog and deciding what type of dog you want. When you know what you want and you are ready for a new dog, then (and only then) is it time for the fun part – going out and choosing puppy dogs.
