Tips for a Proper Pet Care - Rats

  1. Get your rat the right size of cage
Pet rats need ample exercise too. You have to provide them with a cage that's big enough for them to run around. It is also good if you can put some bars and slides in it so they can play whenever they wish. The cage has to be tall and wide to facilitate movements, especially if you intend to take care of many species.
  2. Provide your rat with clean litter and bedding every time
Taking care of your rat also means giving it a clean place to live on. The litter that you will provide them should be absorbent enough to trap in moisture coming from both urine and droppings. Change the litter every so often to eliminate smell. The rat's bedding or nest box should be comfortable enough and should absorb moisture too.
  3. Give the right kind and amount of food
You might be thinking, what do pet rats eat? Well, worry no more! Rats eat almost everything. Like people, they eat both meat and grains. Give your pets lots of proteins to sustain their daily active life. Give them enough to last the day and refill when necessary. And don't forget to nourish them with water.

These are good tips that pertain to the proper care of pet rats. However, there are times that rats acquire health problems once in a while, no matter how much you take care of them. The most common health issue for rats is respiratory problems. This is characterized by fluid coming out of their eyes or nose.

And as pet rats get older, mostly the male species, they develop tumors. These lumps do not really pose any health issues during the early stages. But then again, they may grow large enough to impede their movements and blood supply. You might need to take the rat for surgery if they have it so big.

Other common problems are skin irritation and obesity. Skin problems are mostly due to the rat's habit of scratching themselves. Sometimes, it can be caused by parasites too. So always make sure that everything they use is clean. Obesity is another common problem, and overfeeding the rats is main reason for it.
