Pet reptiles can be divided into two different categories. Some are caught from their wild life habitat or born out of wild parents and then sold to pet owners. The others are bred in captivity. Those animals caught from wild habitat suffer a lot when compared with the other category. Those who capture them use poor means of transport and do not feed them properly. However the animals grown in captivity are taken a reasonable care even though the fact remains that it still does not match the standards of their natural habitat. Even those animals trapped in the wild habit are not caught by using professional methodologies.

Lizards and snakes are the most popular pet reptiles. Generally pet owners own reptiles like African helmeted turtle, bearded dragon, green iguana or marginated tortoise and leopard gecko. There are many types of pet snakes. Poisonous snakes do not find a place among the many types of pet snakes. Even poisonous snakes are grown as pets their venom is taken away.
How To Pick Up A Healthy Pet Reptile?
It is a prerequisite to check the health of the pet reptile before you choose to buy exotic animals such as these. Ninety percent of them will not show evidence of sound health. Therefore it is mandatory that you take a veterinarian along with you to advise you on the credibility of its health. You can also ask for the medical records (if available) from the pet storeowner or the breeder or any other source from whom you make the purchase. Some tips are as follows:
Check The Overall Body Condition
You must ask the veterinarian to find out if the pet will find it comfortable to reside in your house. Only if he gets an idea about the overall conditions of the body he will be able to advise you on this aspect. When the veterinarian sees to this he must also ensure that you will be able to treat the pet in case of some emergencies. If it is not going to be possible for you or even for him then he will advise you accordingly.
Assess Reptile Behavior
This is a very important step. If you are not going to be happy with the reptile behavior it is advisable to refrain from buying it. Only when you see it in person you can get a clear idea. If you have a child it may as well be advisable to bring him or her to the pet store breeder or pet store owner so that you can decide if he will be frightened by the pets’ behavior.
Where To Buy A Reptile?
You can buy a reptile from a pet store or breeder. If they are not found in your locality you may very well ask for them in neighboring cities because pet store owners and breeders having pet reptiles are less when compared with pet animals or pet birds. You can also advertise in any medium like newspaper or internet. This will generate a better response because if pet reptile owners want to give away their reptiles they will contact you immediately as there are no rescue organizations to take care of the abandoned ones.

It is illegal to grow certain pet reptiles. Therefore, you must check the law of land and ensure that the pet, which you intend to buy, does not fall under the forbidden category. No doubt you are taking lot of risks in having a pet reptile and so you must ensure that the risks are well calculated. You must keep in mind that there are no rescue organizations for breeding these pet reptiles and so if you happen to abandon a pet reptile nobody else will take care of it. Since you have nurtured the reptile, it will not be possible to live on its own. The reptile might most probably die out of neglect or cause harm to others due to frustration.

Creating the Right Environment
In order for your new pet reptile to be comfortable it is necessary to create a suitable environment for it to live. This can be achieved through a vivarium or terrarium with adequate lighting and reptile heating, although these are additional expenses they are crucial to the well-being of your new pet.
