You may end up buying an animal that it is illegal for you to keep. Research the animal thoroughly before making any purchases through the newspaper.
Pet shops can be quite a good source for exotic pets, depending on the type of pet you want. Some people may object to buying animals from pet shops on moral grounds. Pet shops may not have the exact animal you require, though. Often it is a matter of luck if the pet shop happens to have what you want at the time. However, they will advise you on registration and care for your animal. Most reputable pet shops will not sell you any animal unless they are certain that you are legally allowed to own it.
Breeders can be a good source of exotic animals, but you will need to do some research first to ensure that you are buying from a reputable breeder. Contact a local or national exotic pets organization, or an organization for the type of animal you are interested in, to ask for registered breeders. If you are buying from a breeder that lives in another state or country, then check whether the animal can be transported to you legally and whether you are legally allowed to own it.
There are a number of companies that sell and buy exotic pets online. This may be a good way of finding the type of animal you want, but it does pose a lot of dangers. Online companies may not be able to give you all the information you require and will probably not offer any assistance afterwards. If you buy from an overseas company, you may not be able to bring it legally into your country.
Before buying any exotic pet, you should ask find out whether they will available if you have any questions or problems. You should also ask about the history of the pet and where it came from. Many animals are illegally taken captive, decreasing animal populations.

Pet shops and breeders may give you some information which will help you decide whether the pet is suitable for the family. However, pet shops and breeders may not tell you everything you need to know. Before buying any pet, read up on it as much as possible, and ask yourself the following questions:- What kind of food does this animal eat? Can I feed it the proper food at the right times?
- What kind of environment does this animal need? Can I provide the right environment and the amount of space that this animal needs?
