Gerbils - Whew! Have You Heard of Them Before?
Gerbils are a part of the rodent family. Breeding gerbils takes a lot of research and work. If you are looking to buy gerbils for sale then you still have the task of choosing between the many options.
They are known for their large incisor teeth which require the gerbil to gnaw constantly in order to prevent overgrowth of the teeth. Gerbils come in a wide variety and make excellent pets. So if you are looking for an excellent small pet then you should consider getting a gerbil. Consider how many options you have when it comes to kinds of gerbils.
Different Kinds of Gerbils
Gerbils come in many different varieties although when it comes to pet gerbils there are only a few. The most common color varieties for gerbils as pets include shades of dove, white, black and golden. There are other colors and albino varieties but they are rare. This is because inbreeding is required to get different colors and in gerbils this can cause deformities such as tail kinks and breathing difficulties. So why is keeping gerbils as pets a good idea?
Pet Gerbils: Why Do Gerbils Make Good Pets?
Pet gerbils are generally an excellent choice, although it does largely depend on the gerbil you get. This is why selecting pet gerbils is very important. Gerbils are very social, athletic, active, curious and bold. They are not nocturnal so you get to enjoy them during the day when you are awake.
Pet gerbils are excellent for younger children since they enjoy people and will often beg to come out of their cage and be held. Although this doesn't mean gerbils as pets isn't a good idea for those with busy lives. A good playground or a second gerbil will be enough to keep your pet gerbil occupied when you are gone during the day. Although you need to make sure you handle them periodically since too little handling can result in them becoming less tame.
It is usually a good idea to get a pair of gerbils when they are between five and seven weeks of age. Purchasing from someone breeding gerbils is a good idea since you can often get two gerbils that are already acquainted with each other. It is also a good idea to purchase from a breeder since you will be getting a gerbil that has been handled since birth which makes them more tame.
Gerbils as pets is also an excellent idea since they are both inexpensive and easy to care for. Often times all you need is a cage, water bottle and lots of cardboard for pet gerbils. Since they are a desert animal they don't have a lot of liquid waste which means they are nearly odorless animals and their cage doesn't have to be cleaned except once every two or three weeks. So how can you select between the gerbils for sale?
