Wonder Pets
A wonder pet is a rare or unusual creature kept as a pet, one which is not commonly thought of as a pet.
People usually keep wonder pets for the sole purpose of having a pet which is unique.
The definition of a wonder pet is still evolving. Some rodents, reptiles, and amphibians have become quite common enough, so that they are no longer considered wonder pets. Sometimes any unique- or wild-looking pet is considered a wonder pet.
Alligators, wolves' foxes, wild cat cubs (lions, tigers, etc.), snakes, tortoises, spiders, scorpions, rare birds and non-human primates are animals kept as wonder pets. Many of the wonder pets are actually those wild animals or birds that are close to extinction.
Unlike pets like dogs and cats, many wonder pets have not been domesticated by man for thousands of years; therefore they still are wild animals. Even if they are bred to be kept as a wonder pet, and raised by humans, they may turn out to be unpredictable, largely untrainable, and in some cases, dangerous, especially when they attain adulthood.
Finding a veterinarian qualified and willing to care of a wonder pet may be difficult or even impossible.
The Convention on the International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Flora and Fauna, or CITES, is in charge of moderating the trade of exotic pets also termed as wonder pets around the world, to prevent any threats to their survival and ecological damage.
