Pet stores are basically places where you can buy not just pet supplies but the pets themselves. They are shops that sell a variety of animals that people buy as pets right from those cute little puppies and kittens to multi colored fishes and frisky rabbits. Traditionally pet stores have always conveyed a unique appeal, finding their way easily into popular culture (remember the song "How much is that doggy in the window?"). Nowadays with the advent of modern technology pet stores have gone high - tech creating a presence online through the Internet.

Though there has been a barrage of criticism directed against these pet stores of late from sources like animal rights groups and humane activists, it must be noted that pet stores have long been a main source where you could find reasonably healthy and happy animals that people could take home as pets. Before the genesis of animal shelters and pet "plantations" pet stores were the only place you could get those "little tykes", your local vet and personal contacts exempted of course. Nowadays all that has changed and pet stores seem to be falling out of popularity. Especially since the coming of the internet, people find it so much simpler to just order their pets online. But there are disadvantages to this method as well. Perhaps the biggest disadvantage is that you cannot see the animal live before you. This means that you have no guarantee about its health, temperament and character. You have to go by what the website says and this is not always right. There are many online pet stores as of now. Some of the better and big ones are: Petco.com and Petsmart.com which specializes in selling pet supplies.
